What changes for travelers on Suneung day, 19 November 2026?

Three things change for travelers: flight times in the early afternoon, the morning rush hour and road access near schools. The College Scholastic Ability Test, called Suneung in Korean, takes place on Thursday 19 November 2026. The Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE) runs the exam, and 551,864 people are registered to sit it at 1,312 test sites, per the Ministry of Education.

The whole country treats the day as a quiet day for students. The government coordinates transport, noise and working hours around the exam timetable, so a normal tourist day can feel slightly different, mainly in the morning and around 1 pm.

When does the exam start and finish?

Students must be in their exam rooms by 8:10 am, and the first paper starts at 8:40 am. The last paper ends at 5:45 pm, per KICE. The timetable matters to you because the roads, trains and airports follow it.

Time What happens in the exam What it means for you
Before 8:10 am Students travel to test sites Busy streets near schools, more subway trains
1:10 to 1:35 pm English listening test Aircraft takeoff and landing times adjusted
5:45 pm Last paper (optional second foreign language) ends Students leave test sites

The English paper runs from 1:10 to 2:20 pm. Only its listening part, the first 25 minutes, triggers the flight changes.

Are flights stopped during the listening test?

Takeoff and landing times are adjusted around the listening test, per the Ministry of Education. The ministry says aircraft and helicopter takeoff and landing times are adjusted between 1:10 and 1:35 pm on 19 November 2026 so that no noise reaches the test rooms. Military firing drills and tank movements also pause during the same 25 minutes.

If your flight to or from Korea is scheduled for around 1 pm on 19 November, check the departure or arrival time with your airline the day before, and again on the morning of travel. Plan your trip from Incheon Airport into Seoul around the time your airline confirms.

How busy is the morning rush on exam day?

The rush starts early and ends late. The Ministry of Education has asked government offices and companies to start work at 10 am or later on 19 November, so commuters travel after the students rather than with them.

More subway trains run in the Seoul metropolitan area from 6 to 8:10 am. Buses and trains near test sites are asked to slow down and avoid using horns. If your plans are flexible, the quietest time to move across Seoul is usually after the later office start, from late morning onward.

For a sense of scale, Seoul city added 29 subway runs between 6 and 10 am for the 2025 exam and kept buses at their shortest intervals during the student travel hours. The city published that plan on 11 November 2025, two days before that exam, so look for its 2026 version in the days before 19 November. The Seoul subway basics guide covers lines and transfers.

Can I take a taxi or drive near a school?

You can, but not all the way to the gate. Vehicles are stopped 200 m before each test site, and students walk the last stretch, per the Ministry of Education. With 1,312 test sites across the country, a hotel or guesthouse may sit inside one of these zones without you knowing.

If your accommodation is next to a school, ask the front desk the day before whether it is a test site. For a morning departure, a subway station is often a safer pickup point than the street outside. The taxi in Korea guide explains how to call and pay.

What goes wrong for visitors, and how do you fix it?

Your flight time is close to 1 pm on exam day. Takeoff and landing times are adjusted from 1:10 to 1:35 pm on exam day, per the Ministry of Education. Check the flight status in your airline’s app or website on 18 and 19 November, and leave room in any onward train or bus booking.

The taxi stops short and the driver points down the road. Cars are held back 200 m from test sites on the exam morning. Walk the remaining distance, or ask the driver to drop you at the nearest main road or subway station instead.

The subway at 9:30 am is fuller than you expected. Offices are asked to open at 10 am or later on 19 November, so office workers travel later than on a normal Thursday. Leave before 8 am or wait until after the later office start if you have luggage.

A quiet street near a school is suddenly full of people and blocked cars. Students must reach test sites by 8:10 am, and the last paper ends at 5:45 pm, per KICE. Choose a route that avoids school streets at those times.

When this does not apply

Suneung day is not a public holiday. VISITKOREA lists no public holidays in November 2026, so palaces, museums and shops keep their normal schedules. Our public holidays guide lists the days that do close banks and offices.

The changes only cover 19 November 2026. They also matter most near schools, on morning commuter routes and for flights around 1 pm. If you spend the day in a palace or a museum away from schools, you may not notice the exam at all. Check the Ministry of Education’s notice and your airline before you travel.
